SAE J3400 J1772 CCS1: NACS ⚠

SAE J3400 (NACS)

AC NACS vs DC NACS — Do Not Mix Them

The NACS connector handles both AC and DC through the same physical port — but the adapter products for each direction are completely different and are not interchangeable.

Use Case Voltage / Current Adapter Category
J1772 AC station → NACS vehicle (Tesla, Ford/GM NACS models) 240V AC, up to 80A AC adapter — J1772 → NACS
NACS AC station → J1772 vehicle (older / non-NACS EVs) 240V AC, up to 80A AC adapter — NACS → J1772
NACS DC station → CCS1 vehicle (Hyundai, BMW, VW, Mercedes) 500A / 1000V DC DC adapter — NACS → CCS1
CCS1 DC station (EA, EVgo, Blink) → NACS vehicle (Tesla) 250kW / 500V DC DC adapter — CCS1 → NACS

Supercharger Access: Connector Fit Is Not Authorization

Tesla Superchargers are increasingly open to non-Tesla vehicles, but access is not automatic. All four factors below apply independently:

Station Type

Some Supercharger sites are Tesla-only, some support Magic Dock / All EV access, and some NACS DC sites are opened only for eligible automaker models. Check the Tesla app for the exact site before route planning.

Vehicle Eligibility

The vehicle’s software must support the Supercharger session authorization protocol. Not all CCS1 vehicles are eligible even with a compatible adapter.

App / Payment Flow

Non-Tesla vehicles typically need to initiate the session through the Tesla app or a supported payment method at the station.

Magic Dock

A built-in CCS1 adapter mechanism at select Supercharger sites — not a connector standard. Only available where physically installed. Check the Tesla app for site-specific availability.

Before route planning: Check the Tesla app for station-level non-Tesla access status. Check your vehicle manufacturer’s app for Supercharger eligibility. Do not assume a site supports your vehicle based on connector type alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NACS the same as SAE J3400?

NACS (North American Charging Standard) is the common name for the connector design originally developed by Tesla. SAE J3400 is the formal SAE recommended practice designation for the same connector. The two terms refer to the same physical and electrical standard.

Can a CCS1 vehicle use a Supercharger with an adapter?

Potentially — but only when the vehicle, station, app/payment flow, and adapter path are all supported. Physical connector fit via a NACS-to-CCS1 adapter is only one requirement. The station must support non-Tesla vehicles, the vehicle must be eligible for Supercharger access, and the session must be authorized through the Tesla app or supported payment method. Verify in the Tesla app and your vehicle manufacturer’s app before use.

Do NACS-native vehicles need an adapter for public Level 2 stations?

Yes. The majority of public Level 2 stations in North America still use SAE J1772 connectors. NACS-native vehicles need a J1772-to-NACS adapter to use these stations. The ChargePapa Tesla-Link J1772→NACS (80A) is designed for this AC Level 2 use case.

What is Magic Dock?

Magic Dock is a built-in CCS1 adapter mechanism installed at select Tesla Supercharger sites. It allows CCS1 vehicles to charge without bringing their own adapter — but only at sites where Magic Dock is physically installed. It is a station feature, not a connector standard. Check the Tesla app for site-specific Magic Dock availability.

Will using a third-party NACS adapter affect my EV warranty?

In the U.S., warranty coverage usually cannot be denied solely because a third-party accessory was used, but a manufacturer may deny a specific claim if it determines the accessory caused or contributed to the damage. Keep documentation and verify your automaker’s adapter guidance before use. ChargePapa product pages list the connector standards and confirmed ratings for each SKU — always match the exact adapter direction and charging mode before use.
