What should you do when the warning appears?
- Stop and record the evidence. Save the exact warning, current setting, vehicle, outlet/circuit, ambient conditions and time into the session.
- Check for heat, odor, discoloration or damage. If present, disconnect only if safe and stop using the equipment until inspected.
- Remove unapproved extensions and conversion adapters. Do not use an accessory to make a lower-rated outlet appear suitable for a higher-current EVSE.
- Confirm the nameplate and configured limit. Match the EVSE input/output rating and commissioned current to the actual branch circuit and connection method.
- Use a lower approved setting only as a controlled diagnostic. If the warning disappears, that points to a load-dependent problem; it does not authorize the higher setting or excuse a damaged connection.
- Escalate to the right party. An electrician checks the supply path; the EVSE maker checks device logs/firmware; the vehicle maker checks vehicle-side faults.
When should charging remain off?
Do not continue charging when a breaker repeatedly trips, the plug or receptacle is hot, plastic is discolored or softened, there is a burning smell, terminals are loose, an error returns after a verified configuration, or water/physical damage is present. Repeated reset-and-retry cycles can hide a developing connection or equipment fault.
How should a permanent charger be selected after diagnosis?
Choose the charger only after the circuit and vehicle connector are confirmed. For a North American property with a J1772 vehicle path and a professionally verified fixed installation, the ChargePapa MRS-AU Property Charger has separate 32A, 40A and 48A variants. The 48A version is a hardwired 60A-circuit path; it should not be presented as a normal plug-in NEMA 14-50 setup.
If your vehicle connector, region or installation type differs, use the ChargePapa Buyer’s Guide instead of substituting a connector adapter or choosing by amperage alone.
What are the limitations of this guide?
This guide cannot inspect a panel, conductor, outlet, EVSE, adapter or vehicle. It also cannot define a proprietary warning without the exact model manual. Local electrical rules and authority requirements control the installation. When supply and equipment evidence disagree, keep the charger off until a qualified professional identifies the cause.
Frequently asked questions
Why does charging work at a lower current but stop at the maximum setting?
A lower setting reduces the continuous load, so an undersized circuit, weak receptacle, loose termination or heat-sensitive connection may not cross its protection threshold as quickly. That does not prove the higher setting is safe; the circuit and EVSE configuration still need verification.
Can I permanently solve an over-amperage warning by lowering the EVSE setting?
Only when the lower setting is an approved configuration for the verified circuit and equipment. Treat an initial reduction as a diagnostic step. A licensed electrician or qualified installer should confirm the circuit, conductor, receptacle or hardwired termination, breaker and commissioning limit.
Does a larger breaker fix an EV charger that draws too much current?
No. Never increase breaker size without verifying conductor ampacity, receptacle or termination rating, panel capacity, EVSE instructions and local code. The breaker protects the circuit; changing it alone can remove protection from an undersized path.
Could the vehicle cause an over-current or maximum-current problem?
The vehicle requests current through the charging-control process, while the EVSE advertises an available limit. A vehicle-side fault is possible, but circuit sizing, EVSE commissioning, plugs, terminals and heat should be checked first. Follow both manufacturers’ diagnostic procedures.
Confirmed a fixed J1772 installation?
After an electrician verifies the circuit and permitted continuous load, compare the MRS-AU 32A / 40A / 48A property-charger variants. Select the variant that matches the verified circuit and vehicle—not the highest number on the page.
