What Is OCPP?
OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is an open-source communication standard developed by the Open Charge Alliance. It defines how EV chargers communicate with central management systems (CSMS) — covering session start/stop, energy metering, remote control, firmware updates, and error reporting.
Because OCPP is open and vendor-neutral, an OCPP-compliant charger can communicate with any OCPP-compatible management platform — regardless of who made the charger or the software. OCPP 1.6 is the current widely-deployed version; OCPP 2.0.1 adds enhanced security and smart charging features.
What Are Proprietary Protocols?
Proprietary protocols are vendor-specific communication systems that only work within one brand's ecosystem. ChargePoint chargers communicate via ChargePoint's proprietary system. JuiceBox chargers use JuiceNet. Tesla Wall Connectors use Tesla's protocol.
This means: if you want to manage ChargePoint chargers, you use ChargePoint's software. If you want to switch to a different management platform, you need to replace the hardware. You are locked into the vendor's ecosystem for the life of the charger.

Honest recommendation: If you're a homeowner with one EV and no solar panels, you don't need OCPP. If you're managing multiple chargers, integrating with solar, or running a fleet — OCPP is worth the additional setup complexity.
