OCPP is an open communication protocol between a charging station and a central management system; a proprietary platform uses vendor-specific communication and controls. OCPP matters most for fleets, workplaces, public charging and multi-vendor management. Wi-Fi, 4G, RFID and an app do not by themselves prove OCPP support.
What is OCPP?
OCPP refers to the Open Charge Point Protocol maintained by the Open Charge Alliance. It defines messages used between charging stations and management systems for functions such as status, transactions, authorization and configuration. Source: Open Charge Alliance OCPP overview.

Which questions should be asked before buying?
- Which OCPP version and profiles are implemented?
- Has the exact charger/backend combination been tested?
- Who provisions URLs, credentials and certificates?
- Which functions work locally if the network or backend is unavailable?
- Who owns session data and software support?
- Does the electrical and connector path fit the site and vehicles?
Does ChargePapa currently document a public OCPP product path?
The current public ChargePapa catalog reviewed on September 26, 2026 does not provide enough model-specific evidence for this article to recommend a charger as OCPP-compatible. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RFID, app control or a commercial enclosure must not be treated as substitutes for documented OCPP support.
If OCPP is mandatory, request written confirmation for the exact SKU, firmware, OCPP version, security profile and target CSMS before ordering. If the requirement is simply scheduled home charging or access control, compare those capabilities separately.
Choose the electrical path before the software layer
Use the ChargePapa Buyer’s Guide to identify connector, region and installation class. Then contact ChargePapa with the exact management-system requirement if OCPP is non-negotiable.
What are the limitations?
OCPP interoperability cannot be guaranteed from a protocol label alone. Backend behavior, certification, configuration, firmware and site network policy must be validated for the actual deployment.
Frequently asked questions
Does Wi-Fi mean a charger supports OCPP?
No. Wi-Fi is only a network transport. OCPP is a charger-to-management-system protocol, and support must be documented for the exact model, firmware and configured backend.
Does a homeowner need OCPP?
Usually not for a single private charging point unless a chosen energy or management platform specifically requires it. Local vehicle scheduling or a model-specific app may be simpler, but capability must still be verified.
Is every OCPP charger compatible with every management platform?
No. OCPP version, feature profiles, security configuration, certificates, backend implementation, firmware and commissioning all matter. Confirm interoperability with both vendors before purchase.
Can OCPP make an EV charge faster?
No. OCPP can manage sessions and exchange data, but charging power remains limited by the site, circuit, EVSE, connector path and vehicle.
