The VW ID.4 sold in North America uses the CCS1 (Combined Charging System, Type 1) port across all model years and trims. CCS1 is backward compatible with J1772 — the upper portion of the CCS1 port is mechanically identical to J1772, so any J1772 Level 2 EVSE connects directly without an adapter. The two additional DC pins at the bottom engage only during DC fast charging.

Can a VW ID.4 Charge at Tesla Superchargers?
Yes — Tesla opened its Supercharger network to non-Tesla EVs, and VW ID.4 owners can access participating stations through the Tesla app. How you connect depends on the station type:
Magic Dock Stations
Tesla’s Magic Dock locations include a built-in NACS-to-CCS1 adapter for non-Tesla vehicles. No hardware needed, but Magic Dock is not available at every Supercharger. Check the Tesla app map for the non-Tesla charging icon at your nearest station.
Standard NACS Supercharger Cables
A NACS-to-CCS1 adapter is required. The ID.4’s CCS1 port connects to the adapter, which plugs into the Supercharger’s NACS cable. Initiate the session via the Tesla app.

What NACS-to-CCS1 Adapter Does the VW ID.4 Need?
The ID.4’s CCS1 port accepts up to 175 kW DC on 2023+ RWD models — that’s 175A at 1000V. The adapter must pass that current without thermal throttling. On 2021–2022 models, the peak is 125 kW, which places even lower demand on the adapter.
The critical spec is the adapter’s current rating. An adapter rated at 200A or 250A will handle the ID.4 without issue. Higher-rated adapters provide more thermal headroom during extended fast charging sessions, particularly in hot conditions.

VW ID.4 Level 2 Home Charging — No Adapter Required
The ID.4’s CCS1 port accepts J1772 Level 2 connectors natively — no adapter, no converter needed. Any J1772 EVSE plugs directly into the car. The ID.4’s onboard AC charger is rated at 11 kW across all US trims and model years.

Level 2 charging adds approximately 30–38 miles of range per hour at 11 kW, depending on temperature and trim.

NEC Article 625: EV circuits must be rated at 125% of continuous draw. A 48A EVSE requires a 60A dedicated breaker.
VW ID.4 Charging Network Compatibility
The VW ID.4 is one of the most network-compatible EVs on the road — CCS1 is the standard for Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint, Blink, and virtually every non-Tesla public fast charger in North America. The only network that requires additional hardware for current CCS1 models is Tesla Supercharger when a Magic Dock station is not available.

VW and Electrify America have a dedicated partnership — EA is the primary DC fast charging network for ID.4 owners in the US, with 800+ stations and 3,500+ chargers. For most ID.4 owners, EA access covers the majority of road trip charging without any adapter.
RWD vs AWD ID.4 — Does the Adapter Differ?
No. The RWD and AWD ID.4 variants use the same CCS1 port and the same NACS-to-CCS1 adapter. The difference is only peak DC speed: the 2023+ AWD ID.4 caps at 135 kW while the RWD caps at 175 kW. Both are within the 350 kW ceiling of the ChargePapa DC-Link adapter.
