You have a driveway, a carport, or street parking with an outlet nearby — but no garage. This guide covers the physical setup questions: where to put the outlet, how to route the cable, what the weather will do to your equipment, and where the safety boundaries are.

The most common no-garage charging setup is simpler than most people think: a NEMA 14-50 outlet on an exterior wall, a portable Level 2 charger, and a cable that reaches your parking spot. The questions are in the details — outlet placement, cable management, weatherproofing, and what happens when it rains, freezes, or someone tries to walk off with your charger.

1. Where to Put the Outdoor Outlet

The outlet is the foundation of any no-garage setup. A licensed electrician runs a dedicated 240V circuit from your panel to an exterior outlet box — this is not a DIY job for a 50A circuit. Key placement decisions:

  • Height: Mount at 18–48 inches above grade. High enough to avoid standing water, low enough to reach without a step ladder.
  • Side of house: Mount on the wall closest to your parking spot to minimise cable run. Every extra foot of cable is a trip hazard and a theft opportunity.
  • Outlet type: NEMA 14-50 is the most versatile — compatible with all ChargePapa portable chargers and most other brands. NEMA 6-50 works but limits future flexibility. Avoid NEMA 10-50 (no ground, not to current code).
  • Cover requirement: NEC 406.9 requires a weatherproof in-use cover (the bubble-style cover that closes over an inserted plug) for any outdoor outlet. A standard flip-cover is not sufficient when the charger is plugged in.
  • GFCI protection: Required by NEC for all outdoor outlets. Most portable chargers include built-in GFCI, but the outlet circuit should also be GFCI-protected at the breaker or outlet level.

Cost reference: A dedicated 240V/50A outdoor outlet installation typically costs $200–$600 in the US depending on panel distance and local labour rates. This is the single most impactful upgrade for no-garage EV charging.

2. Cable Routing Across a Driveway

If your outlet is on the house wall and your car parks 10–25 feet away, you need a cable management plan. Options in order of permanence:

  • Wall-mount holster: Mount the charger body on the exterior wall next to the outlet. The cable hangs from the holster and reaches the car. No cable on the ground. This is the cleanest solution for driveways up to ~25 feet wide. ChargePapa portable chargers include wall-mount hardware.
  • Cable ramp / cord cover: A rubber or plastic ramp that sits over the cable where it crosses a walkway or driveway. Rated for vehicle drive-over. Required if the cable crosses any path that pedestrians or vehicles use. Available at hardware stores for $15–$40.
  • Overhead cable run: For longer driveways, a conduit run along the eave or fence line keeps the cable off the ground entirely. Requires a longer cable or a fixed wallbox at the end point. More permanent, cleaner, but requires planning.
  • Underground conduit: The most permanent solution — PVC conduit buried 12–18 inches (NEC depth for 240V residential) runs from the panel to a weatherproof outlet or wallbox at the parking spot. Eliminates all surface cable. Requires a permit and licensed electrician in most jurisdictions.

Extension cord boundary: Do not use a standard extension cord with a Level 2 EV charger. A 32A–40A charging load on an undersized extension cord creates a fire risk. The only acceptable solution is a purpose-built EV charging extension cable rated for the full amperage of your charger — or moving the outlet closer. 3. Weatherproofing: What Your Charger Actually Needs

All ChargePapa portable chargers carry an IP rating that defines their weather resistance. Understanding what that rating means in practice:

For open driveway use with no overhead cover, IP55 is the practical minimum. IP65 is recommended for climates with heavy rain or coastal salt air. The cable connector junction (where the charger plugs into the outlet) is the most vulnerable point — the weatherproof in-use outlet cover handles this, not the charger's IP rating.

Cold weather note: IP ratings do not cover freeze resistance. ChargePapa's TPU cable jackets remain flexible to -30°C / -22°F. PVC cables stiffen and crack below -10°C. 4. Theft Prevention and Security

A portable charger left plugged in on a driveway overnight is a theft target. Practical mitigation options:

  • Cable lock: A coiled steel cable lock through the charger handle and around a fixed point (fence post, wall bracket) deters opportunistic theft. Not defeat-proof, but effective against casual theft.
  • Wall-mount bracket with lock: Mount the charger body in a locked enclosure or use a locking wall bracket. The charger stays fixed; only the cable end is exposed at the car.
  • Charge port lock on the vehicle: Most EVs lock the charge port when charging is active. Verify your vehicle's charge port lock behaviour — some lock automatically, some require manual activation in the app.

  • Motion-activated lighting: A motion sensor light at the outlet location is a low-cost deterrent that also makes nighttime plug-in easier.

5. Curbside and Street Parking: What's Actually Possible

If you park on the street rather than a private driveway, the options narrow significantly. Running a cable from your house across a public pavement to a car is prohibited in most US and EU jurisdictions — it creates a trip hazard on public property and is typically a code violation.

What is possible for street parkers:

  • Kerbside charging points: Some UK and EU cities (London, Amsterdam, Oslo) have installed kerbside charging posts on residential streets. Check your local council or municipality for availability and application processes.
