Which adapter you need for your Rivian depends on one thing: your model year. Rivian switched to NACS in 2024, so R1T and R1S trucks from 2024 onward plug directly into Tesla Superchargers without any adapter — but they need a small J1772 adapter for the older Level 2 stations still common at hotels and parking garages. If you drive a 2022 or 2023 Rivian with a CCS1 port, the situation is reversed: J1772 Level 2 works natively, and you need an adapter for Supercharger access.

Rivian was among the first non-Tesla manufacturers to commit to NACS adoption, announcing the 2024 transition before SAE formally standardized the connector as SAE J3400 in June 2023.

J1772 Destination Chargers
J1772 (SAE J1772) remains the dominant Level 2 standard at hotels, workplace chargers, and many public parking installations. A NACS car cannot plug into a J1772 handle without an adapter. The adapter attaches to the J1772 station handle; your standard NACS cable then plugs into your truck.

Tesla Superchargers
2024+ Rivian connects natively. Network authentication through Rivian app (pre-authorization via Tesla account linkage required on first use — see Rivian’s Supercharger setup guide).
Electrify America / EVgo / CCS1 DC Networks
Electrify America and EVgo still operate CCS1 DC fast chargers. The 2024+ Rivian (NACS) cannot connect to CCS1 DC infrastructure without a NACS-to-CCS1 DC adapter. As of mid-2026, this adapter direction is uncommon in the market — check network station availability before long trips away from Supercharger corridors.

Tesla Supercharger Access
The 2022–2023 Rivian has a CCS1 inlet. Tesla Superchargers use NACS. Because CCS1 and NACS use the same PLC (Power Line Communication) signaling protocol for DC charging, a passive (non-active-protocol) adapter bridges the two.
Passive adapter — no active protocol converter required. Rated 500A / 1000V DC. IP65 weatherproofing. Actual session speed capped by the lower of your Rivian’s DC max charge rate (135 kW for R1T/R1S) or the Supercharger stall’s output.

CCS1 includes the J1772 upper section — J1772 Level 2 plugs directly into any CCS1 vehicle.
Home Charging
- 2022–2023 Rivian: any J1772 EVSE or wallbox works natively (CCS1 car). A NACS wallbox requires a J1772-to-NACS adapter on the cable end.
- 2024+ Rivian: NACS wallbox works natively. A J1772 home charger needs the Tesla-Link adapter.
