6 Causes and How to Diagnose Each
The rated output on a charger is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Actual charging speed is always the minimum of three limits: the charger's rated output, the vehicle's onboard charger (OBC) capacity, and the quality of the circuit supplying power.

Cause 1 — Your Vehicle's Onboard Charger (OBC) Is the Bottleneck
Every EV has an onboard charger (OBC): hardware inside the vehicle that converts AC power from the wall into DC power for the battery. The OBC has its own maximum input rating, independent of what the EVSE can supply.

If your EVSE is rated at 48A but your vehicle's OBC caps at 32A (~7.7 kW), your car will draw 32A — not because anything is wrong, but because the car is managing its own charging rate.
Check your vehicle's spec sheet or owner's manual for "maximum onboard charger capacity" or "maximum AC charging rate."
Cause 2 — Scheduled Charging or Departure Timer Is Active
Most EVs and smart wallboxes support scheduled charging — the car only draws power during specific windows, or ramps up to full speed closer to a set departure time. If your app shows the car is "charging" but the rate is unusually low (2–4 kW instead of 7–11 kW), check your vehicle's scheduling settings. Scheduled charging throttles draw intentionally — this is not a fault.

Cause 3 — Battery Thermal Management Is Reducing Rate
EV batteries charge at reduced rates when the pack is outside its optimal temperature range.
- Cold battery (below ~10°C / 50°F): expect 30–60% of rated charging rate until the battery warms up.
- Hot battery (above ~40°C / 104°F): thermal management reduces rate to protect cells — common after a long DC fast-charging session.
Pre-conditioning fixes this on most modern EVs: set a departure time and the car will heat or cool the battery using grid power before you leave.
Cause 4 — The Circuit Is Undersized
NEC Article 625 requires EV charging circuits to be rated at 125% of the charger's continuous current draw. A 32A charger needs a 40A dedicated circuit; a 48A charger needs a 60A circuit. If your circuit is undersized, the charger automatically reduces current to stay within safe limits.
Check your breaker panel. The breaker protecting your EVSE circuit must be labeled at least 125% of your charger's rated current (e.g., 60A breaker for a 48A charger).

Cause 5 — Extension Cord or Long Run of Undersized Wire
A standard household extension cord is not rated for continuous EV charging loads. NEC Article 625 explicitly prohibits using extension cords with EVSE. The charger reads the available voltage and adjusts current to avoid overheating the cable — an undersized supply path triggers automatic throttling.
The same applies to permanent wiring: if the wire gauge from your panel to your EVSE is undersized for the distance, voltage drop causes the same throttling effect.
Cause 6 — Grid Voltage Is Lower Than Expected
At 240V, a 48A charger delivers 11.5 kW. If incoming voltage is 225V (common in older homes or during peak grid demand), the same 48A draws only 10.8 kW. The charger may also reduce current slightly when it detects voltage sag.
A smart wallbox with energy monitoring (ChargePapa V2 or V8) logs voltage per session — consistent readings of 220–228V may warrant a call to your utility.
The Diagnostic Decision Tree
Work through these steps in order. Stop when you find the cause.
If OBC < charger rating → this IS the ceiling. Working normally.
If a timer is active → disable or adjust it.
If very cold or hot → wait or pre-condition before charging.
Must be ≥125% × charger amps. If undersized → consult a licensed electrician.
Remove any extension cord. Verify wire gauge is correct for the run length.
If consistently ≤220V → contact your utility provider.
