What You're Seeing
You plugged in your EV. Charging started normally. Then it stopped — or slowed to nearly nothing — at or around 80%. The charger shows no error. The car shows no fault. But charging has clearly stopped or stalled.

Cause 1 · Normal
Vehicle Charge Limit — Battery Protection by Design
Most modern EVs ship with a default charge limit of 80% — or allow the driver to set one. This is not a malfunction. Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster when held at 100% state of charge for extended periods. Charging to 80% and keeping the battery in the 20–80% range significantly extends long-term battery health.
Where to check and change this:
- Tesla: Charging menu → Charge Limit slider. Default is 80% for daily use. Set to 100% only for long trips.
- Hyundai / Kia: Charging settings in the infotainment system or via the OEM app (Bluelink / Kia Connect).
- Nissan LEAF: Long Life Mode limits to 80%. Toggle in the charging settings menu.
- BMW / Mercedes: Charging settings in iDrive / MBUX or the OEM app.
- GM (Chevy, GMC, Cadillac EV): myChevrolet / myGMC app → Charging → Target Charge Level.
- Ford: FordPass app → Charging → Charge Level.
- Volkswagen / Audi / Porsche: Charging settings in the vehicle menu or OEM app.
Recommendation: Keep the daily limit at 80%. Only charge to 100% before a long trip, and try not to leave the car sitting at 100% for more than a few hours.
Cause 2 · Normal
Scheduled Charging or Departure Timer
If your vehicle or charger has a scheduled charging window set, it may stop charging when the schedule ends — even if the battery is not full. Similarly, departure timers calculate backward from your departure time and stop charging once the target level is reached, which may be 80% if that is what was configured.
Where to check:
- In your vehicle's charging or scheduling menu — look for "Scheduled Charging", "Departure Time", or "Off-Peak Charging".
- In your OEM app — most apps show active schedules on the charging screen.

Fix: Disable or adjust the schedule if you need a full charge. If you set the schedule intentionally to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, this is working as designed.
Cause 3 · Normal
Cold Weather, Battery Balancing, and Thermal Protection
Lithium-ion batteries charge more slowly — and sometimes stop early — when cold. The battery management system (BMS) reduces or halts charging to protect cells from damage. This is especially common below 5°C (41°F). The car may also pause charging briefly to balance individual cell voltages, which can look like a stop at 80%.
Signs this is the cause:
- Ambient temperature is below 10°C (50°F).
- Charging resumes on its own after 10–30 minutes, or after the battery warms up.
- The vehicle app shows "Conditioning battery" or a similar message.
- Charging rate was already slower than usual before stopping.
What to do: Wait. The BMS will resume charging once the battery reaches operating temperature. Pre-conditioning the battery (via the OEM app before plugging in) can reduce this delay significantly.
Cause 4 · Check Settings
App or Charger Charge Limit Set Previously
Some smart chargers — including certain ChargePapa models with app control — allow you to set a charge limit directly on the charger side. If a limit was set in the app and forgotten, the charger will stop delivering power at that level regardless of the vehicle's own settings. This is the most common "unexpected" 80% stop.
Where to check:
- Open the charger's companion app and look for a "Charge Limit", "Stop at %", or "Energy Limit" setting.
- On the ChargePapa T4A: open the app → Charging Settings → check for any active charge limit or energy cap.
- Check whether a kWh energy limit (not a % limit) was set — if the session energy cap matches what 80% of your battery requires, it will stop at the same point every time.
Fix: Clear or raise the charge limit in the app. If no limit is set in the charger app, the limit is coming from the vehicle — go back to Cause 1.
Cause 5 · Investigate
When Stopping at 80% Is Not Normal
If none of the above causes apply — no charge limit set, no schedule active, not cold weather, and the car has never had this behavior before — the stop at 80% may indicate a real fault in the charger, the vehicle's charging system, or the battery management system.
Signs this may be a real fault:
- The charger shows a fault light or error code at the point of stopping.
- The vehicle dashboard shows a charging error or battery warning.
- Charging stops at 80% even after you disable all charge limits and schedules.
- The behavior started suddenly after a software update, a charging incident, or a period of extreme weather.
- The car charges normally on a different charger (pointing to a charger fault), or fails on multiple chargers (pointing to a vehicle fault).
Diagnostic steps:
- Try a different charger. If the car charges past 80% on another unit, the fault is in your charger — contact ChargePapa support.
- Try your charger on a different vehicle (if possible). If the other vehicle charges normally, the fault is in your car's BMS or charging system.
- Check for any stored fault codes using an OBD-II reader or via the OEM app's diagnostic section.
- If the vehicle is under warranty, contact your dealer — BMS faults are typically covered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it bad to charge my EV to 100% every day?
For most lithium-ion EV batteries, yes — charging to 100% daily accelerates long-term capacity degradation. Most manufacturers recommend keeping daily charging between 20–80% and only charging to 100% before long trips. Check your vehicle manual for the specific recommendation for your battery chemistry.
My car used to charge to 100% and now stops at 80%. Did something change?
A software update may have changed the default charge limit, or a charge limit may have been set accidentally in the vehicle or app. Check your vehicle's charging settings and your charger app for any active limits. If no limits are set and the behavior is new, check for a recent OTA update in your vehicle's software history — some updates change default charging behavior.
Does the charger control the charge limit, or does the car?
Both can. The vehicle's BMS is the primary controller — it tells the charger how much power to deliver and when to stop. But smart chargers with app control can also impose their own energy or percentage limits on top of the vehicle's settings. If both are set, the lower limit wins.
Why does charging slow down significantly above 80%?
This is normal and expected. Lithium-ion cells accept charge more slowly as they approach full capacity — the BMS reduces the charge rate (CC/CV charging profile) to avoid overcharging individual cells. The last 20% of a charge can take as long as the first 80%. This is not a fault; it is how the chemistry works.
My charger shows "complete" at 80% but the car shows it's still charging. Which is right?
The vehicle's display is more accurate for state of charge. If the charger shows "complete" but the car is still accepting power, the charger may have an energy limit set that was reached. Check the charger app for any kWh cap. If no cap is set and the charger is genuinely stopping power delivery, contact ChargePapa support.
Does stopping at 80% affect my range?
Yes — for that day. An 80% charge gives you roughly 80% of your vehicle's rated range. For most daily commutes this is more than sufficient. If you need full range for a specific trip, charge to 100% the night before and depart soon after charging completes.
