Type 1 (J1772) — The US Standard

Type 1, formally SAE J1772, is the AC charging standard for North America. It's a 5-pin connector that handles Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) AC charging up to 80A. Every non-Tesla EV sold in the US before 2023 uses J1772 for AC charging.

Tesla vehicles include a J1772 adapter, allowing them to use any J1772 charger. This makes J1772 the de facto universal standard for Level 2 charging in North America — any J1772 charger works with any US EV via the appropriate adapter.

Type 2 (Mennekes) — The European Standard

Type 2, formally IEC 62196-2 or "Mennekes" (after the German manufacturer), is the mandatory AC charging standard for the European Union. It's a 7-pin connector that supports single-phase (up to 32A / 7.4 kW) and three-phase (up to 32A / 22 kW) AC charging.

All EVs sold in the EU use Type 2 for AC charging, including EU-spec Tesla vehicles. Australia and New Zealand have also adopted Type 2 as their standard. Type 2 is the most widely deployed AC charging standard globally by number of countries.

NACS — Tesla's Standard Goes Open

NACS (North American Charging Standard), formerly Tesla's proprietary connector, was opened as an industry standard (SAE J3400) in 2023. Unlike J1772 and Type 2 which are AC-only, NACS handles both AC charging (Level 2) and DC fast charging through the same connector — similar to how Type 2 works in Europe with CCS2.

Ford, GM, Rivian, Volvo, and most major automakers have announced NACS adoption for 2025+ US models. By 2026, NACS is becoming the dominant standard for new US EVs — but J1772 infrastructure will remain widespread for many years.

CCS1 and CCS2 — DC Fast Charging

CCS (Combined Charging System) adds DC fast charging pins below the AC connector. CCS1 combines J1772 + DC pins (US/Canada). CCS2 combines Type 2 + DC pins (EU/AU). CCS chargers can deliver 50–350 kW, enabling 10–80% charges in 20–40 minutes for most EVs.

Note: CCS is a DC fast charging standard only. Home Level 2 chargers use J1772 or Type 2 — not CCS. The CCS connector is only found at public DC fast charging stations.

Cross-Standard Adapters: Bridging the Gaps

Where Is the Industry Heading?

The long-term trajectory is toward consolidation. In North America, NACS is becoming the dominant standard for new vehicles. In Europe, Type 2 + CCS2 is already universal. The remaining fragmentation is between regions (US vs EU vs China) and between AC and DC standards.

For the next 5–10 years, adapters remain the practical solution for cross-standard charging. The J1772 infrastructure built over the past decade will remain in service long after new vehicles switch to NACS — making J1772-to-NACS adapters a long-term necessity for mixed-standard households and public charging networks.
