EV Charger Offline or WiFi Not Working: Causes and Fixes
Your charger app shows offline — but is your car actually still charging? This guide decodes what offline really means, what you can still do locally, and how to restore the connection.
Answer this first
Is your car actually still charging?
Check your vehicle’s dashboard or OEM app. If the battery percentage is increasing, your charger is working normally — only the app’s remote connection has dropped. This is the most common scenario and does not require urgent action.
If the battery is not increasing and the charger shows no activity, the offline status may be accompanied by a charging fault. Check the charger’s physical indicator or display for a fault signal — see EV Charger Red Fault Light if a fault is showing.
Connection Status Snapshot
| What the app shows | Charging affected? | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Offline — car still charging | NO | Router, app, or server issue | Cause 1–2 |
| Offline — car not charging | YES | Charger fault or power issue | Cause 4–5 |
| App cannot find charger at all | UNKNOWN | WiFi not paired or app account issue | Cause 3 |
| Connected but no session data | CHECK | Server sync delay or app cache | Cause 2 |
Local Charging vs Remote Control
Smart EV chargers have two independent functions: local charging (plug in and charge) and remote control (app monitoring, scheduling, energy tracking). These operate independently.
Local Charging
Works without WiFi or app connection. As long as the charger has power and the connector is properly seated, charging proceeds normally. An offline status in the app does not stop local charging.
Remote Control
Requires active WiFi between the charger and your router, and a working cloud connection. If either drops, the app shows offline — but local charging continues unaffected.

60-Second First Checks
Run through these before reading the full cause list.
- Check if the car is actually charging — look at the vehicle dashboard or OEM app. If yes, the charger is fine and only the app connection has dropped.
- Check your home WiFi router — is it online? Can other devices connect? Restart the router if in doubt.
- Check the charger’s physical display or indicator — does it show a fault code or error? If yes, see the fault light guide. If it shows normal status, the issue is network-side.
- Force-close and reopen the app — app cache issues can cause a false offline status. Close completely, reopen, and wait 30 seconds.
- Check your phone’s internet connection — if your phone has no data or is on a restricted network, the app cannot reach the server.
- Check for app or server outages — if multiple users report the same issue simultaneously, it may be a server-side outage. Check ChargePapa’s support channels.
Cause Decoder: Why Is the Charger Showing Offline?
Cause 1 · Network-Side · Charging Unaffected
Router or WiFi Signal Issue
The most common cause. The charger has lost its connection to your home router — due to a router restart, a WiFi channel change, a password change, or the charger being out of range. The charger continues to charge locally but cannot communicate with the app.
Signs this is the cause:
- Car is still charging normally
- Other smart home devices also lost connection around the same time
- You recently changed your WiFi password or router settings
- The charger is far from the router or separated by thick walls
Fix: Restart your router. If the charger does not reconnect within 5 minutes, use the app to re-enter your WiFi credentials, or press the WiFi reset button on the charger (refer to your model’s manual). Ensure the charger is within reliable WiFi range — ideally within 10 metres of the router with no thick concrete walls between them.
Cause 2 · App / Server-Side · Charging Unaffected
App Cache or Server Sync Issue
The charger is online and charging normally, but the app is displaying a stale or incorrect status. This can happen after an app update, a server maintenance window, or a temporary cloud service interruption.
Signs this is the cause:
- Car is still charging normally
- The app recently updated or you just reinstalled it
- The offline status appeared suddenly with no network changes
- Logging out and back in to the app restores the connection
Fix: Force-close the app, clear the app cache (Android: Settings → Apps → ChargePapa → Clear Cache), reopen and log in again. If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall the app.
Cause 3 · Pairing / Setup · App Cannot Find Charger
WiFi Not Paired or Charger Not Added to Account
If the app cannot find the charger at all — not just offline but completely absent — the charger may never have been successfully paired to your WiFi network or added to your app account. Common after a factory reset, a new router, or a new phone setup.
Signs this is the cause:
- The charger does not appear in the app device list at all
- You recently replaced your router or changed to a new WiFi network
- You set up a new phone or reinstalled the app from scratch
- The charger was factory reset
Fix: Re-pair the charger to your WiFi network using the setup procedure in your model’s user manual. For the V1, V2, and T4A, this is done via the ChargePapa app → Add Device. Ensure you are connecting to a 2.4 GHz network — most smart chargers do not support 5 GHz WiFi.
Cause 4 · Charger-Side · Charging Also Stopped
Charger Communication Module Fault
In rare cases, the charger’s internal WiFi or communication module has faulted. This may cause both the offline status and a charging interruption. The charger’s physical display will usually show an error code in this scenario.
Signs this is the cause:
- Car is not charging and the charger shows a fault signal
- The charger’s display shows a communication-related error code
- A full power cycle does not restore connectivity or charging
- The charger was exposed to a power surge or extreme conditions
Next step: Check the charger’s display for an error code. See EV Charger Red Fault Light for fault signal guidance. If the fault persists after a full power cycle, contact ChargePapa support — covered under the 2-year warranty.
Cause 5 · Power / Installation · Charging Also Stopped
Power Interruption to the Charger
If the charger has lost power entirely — due to a tripped breaker, a power outage, or a wiring issue — it will appear offline in the app and will not charge. The charger itself has no power, so the display or indicator lights will be completely off.
Signs this is the cause:
- The charger’s display or indicator lights are completely off
- The circuit breaker for the charger circuit has tripped
- There was a recent power outage or electrical work
Fix: Check and reset the circuit breaker. If the breaker trips again immediately, see EV Charger Tripping the Breaker before retrying.
Safe Reconnect Sequence
Follow this sequence in order. Stop when the connection is restored.
- Confirm the car is or is not charging — this determines urgency.
- Force-close and reopen the app. Wait 30 seconds.
- Check your phone’s internet connection. Switch between WiFi and mobile data to isolate.
- Restart your home router. Wait 2 minutes for it to fully reconnect.
- Check the charger’s physical display for any error code or fault signal.
- Power cycle the charger: switch off at the circuit breaker, wait 30 seconds, switch back on.
- If the charger still does not appear online after 5 minutes, re-pair it to your WiFi via the app setup flow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my car stop charging if the charger goes offline?
No — in almost all cases, local charging continues uninterrupted even when the app shows offline. The WiFi connection is used for remote monitoring and control only. The charger delivers power to the vehicle independently of its network status.
My charger only supports 2.4 GHz. How do I check if my router is broadcasting it?
Log in to your router’s admin panel (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) and check the wireless settings. If your router uses a combined band (same SSID for 2.4 and 5 GHz), try splitting them into separate networks and connecting the charger to the 2.4 GHz one specifically.
I changed my WiFi password. How do I reconnect the charger?
You will need to re-pair the charger to your network. Open the ChargePapa app, go to your device settings, and follow the WiFi setup flow to enter the new credentials. Refer to your model’s user manual for the exact steps, as the procedure varies between the V1, V2, and T4A.
Does the ChargePapa app work when I am away from home?
Yes — for smart models like the V1, V2, and T4A, the app connects via the cloud, so you can monitor and control the charger remotely as long as both your phone and the charger have internet access. If the charger’s WiFi drops while you are away, you will see an offline status until the connection is restored.
My basic ChargePapa charger has no app. Can it still go offline?
No — basic ChargePapa models without WiFi or app connectivity do not have an online/offline state. They charge locally whenever plugged in and powered. If your charger is not charging, the issue is a fault or power problem, not a connectivity issue.
The app shows the charger online but session data is not updating. What is happening?
This is usually a server sync delay or an app cache issue. Force-close the app, clear the cache, and reopen. If the data still does not update after a few minutes, the charger is likely charging normally and the display will sync once the server catches up. This is not a fault.
