EV Charger Says Connected But Not Charging: 8 Causes to Check
Connection is only the handshake. Charging starts only after the rest of the path agrees. Here is how to find which part is blocking the session.
If your EV charger says connected but not charging, the problem is usually not "no power." Most often, the charger and vehicle can see each other, but the session is being blocked by one of a few common issues: timer settings, charge-current limits, connector latch problems, circuit instability, temperature limits, or the wrong adapter path. In simple terms, connection is only the handshake. Charging starts only after the rest of the path agrees.
This is one of the most common owner-side charging problems because it feels misleading. The cable is plugged in, lights may be on, and the app may show "connected," but no energy is flowing.
What Does "Connected But Not Charging" Actually Mean?
It usually means the vehicle and charger have detected each other, but the charging session has not moved into active power delivery. That is different from: no physical connection, a dead outlet or dead wallbox, or a connector that is completely unsupported.
This breaks down into three stages:

8 Causes to Check — In Order
1. Is the car waiting on a charging schedule or timer?
This is the easiest thing to miss. Many EVs let owners set delayed charging, departure scheduling, off-peak windows, or battery target logic. The vehicle may be intentionally waiting, even though everything looks connected. This works best as the first check because it is quick and costs nothing.
Look for:
- Delayed charging enabled in the vehicle app or dashboard
- Off-peak charging window set to a future time
- Charge-until-departure logic active
- Unusual battery target or energy schedule
If the app says "connected" but the car is waiting for a future time, the charger may be behaving normally.
2. Is the charge current limited too low?
Some vehicles and chargers allow current to be reduced manually. That is useful for weak circuits, shared loads, or travel use, but it can also leave the owner thinking the charger has failed.

A session can appear connected but not meaningfully charge if the current is capped too low or if the charger is waiting for a different condition.
3. Is the connector fully seated and latched?
Sometimes the charger is physically inserted but not fully locked into a proper charging position. This is common with stiff or worn connectors, public stations with damaged latches, adapters that are not fully seated, and vehicles parked at a bad cable angle.
If you are using an adapter, remove the whole chain, inspect both ends, and reconnect carefully in the correct order. 4. Is the power source unstable or overloaded?
A charger can show a live connection while still failing to begin a clean charging session if the power source is unstable or constrained. Common examples include outlet-based charging on a weak path, a circuit shared with other heavy loads, site power dropping when HVAC or other equipment starts, and a portable charger being used in a temporary location that is not ideal for repeated EV charging.

5. Is the charger too hot or is the car protecting itself?
Charging can pause or refuse to ramp if the system sees temperatures outside its preferred operating range. This does not always mean hardware damage. It can simply mean one part of the path is protecting itself: the vehicle battery, the onboard charger, the connector head, or the charger electronics.
Some drivers experience this as "it connected, then did nothing," especially in hot garages or after repeat sessions. Allow the system to cool, then retry. If the problem only occurs in high-temperature conditions, thermal protection is the likely cause.
6. Are you using the wrong adapter type for the charging category?
This is a classic source of confusion. An AC adapter solves an AC connector problem. A DC adapter solves a DC fast-charging problem. The two categories do not substitute for each other.
- J1772 to Tesla adapter = AC Level 1 / Level 2 compatibility
- CCS1 to NACS DC adapter = DC fast-charging path
If the session involves home or workplace AC charging, the adapter path has to stay inside that AC category. If you are mixing AC and DC expectations, the charger may appear "connected" while the real path is simply wrong for the use case.
7. Is the vehicle itself refusing the session?
Sometimes the charger is fine and the car is the side refusing to move into active charging. This can happen because of vehicle-side charging faults, temperature-related charging protection, software state or app state, or battery already near target level.
If your EV charges normally at another station but not at one specific setup, the problem is usually local to the site or connection chain. If it fails in multiple places, the vehicle side becomes more likely.
8. Are you troubleshooting the wrong problem entirely?
Some "connected but not charging" complaints are actually different problems in disguise:
- Charging too slowly — current is flowing but lower than expected
- Charging starts then stops — session initiates but drops
- Breaker trips after several minutes — circuit overload, not a charger fault
- Adapter works at one station but not another — station authorization issue

Why does my EV show connected but no charging current?
Usually because the session is paused, delayed, current-limited, blocked by latch or adapter issues, or waiting on vehicle-side logic. "Connected" only confirms detection, not active energy flow.

Usually no. First check schedules, current settings, connector seating, adapter direction, and site power conditions. Many cases are setup problems, not failed hardware.
